A remix project for the Media Design Fall 2018 course.

I absolutely loved working on this project. Although it was difficult to decide what I wanted to remix, I knew that I wanted to make a statement about an important issue that I am also discussing in my Media Theory final paper: the lack of Latino representation in media. There aren’t many Latinos that play prominent roles in film, let alone cartoons. I used to love watching cartoons as a kid, Powerpuff Girls in particular. Bubbles was my favorite, and I always thought it was because her hair color was my favorite color. But, subconsciously it may have been because she had blonde hair and blue eyes: the epitome of beauty in American standards. Realizing this influenced me to change up their looks so that they are more relatable to minority groups. So, I decided to remix the Powerpuff Girls as Latinas.

I decided to work on it as an image in Photoshop, and after realizing it was supposed to be time based I decided to use the image I created below as the cover art for the piece.
However, it looked so amateur and I wanted to create something a lot better and more sophisticated. I reached out to my cousin who is a great artist, and she decided to remix my remix. She came up with a version of my Latina Powerpuff Girls. I was in awe when I saw it, but decided to remix her remix, and came up with the animated gif that later became the official cover art.
The audio contains three separate tracks: the Powerpuff theme song in English and Spanish, and the song La Dueña del Swing by Los Hermanos Rosario. I decided to create a selective and reflexive remix because I felt it was the clearest way to get my message across. I subtracted the parts of each track that were unnecessary and decided to mix the pieces together, overlapping one another at certain points. However, they are still recognizable to the public, if they are familiar with each track.
